For more than forty years, Christmas in the Park has been the South Bay's defining holiday ritual: two acres of downtown San Jose covered in more than 500 Christmas trees, each decorated by a local school, scout troop, or community group, threaded between decades-old animated displays. It's free, it's open every night from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year's Day (noon to 10pm in 2025), and it's the rare tradition that works equally well for a 2-year-old and a visiting grandparent. The tradition started with Don Lima's 1950s Nativity displays in Willow Glen and moved to Plaza de Cesar Chavez around 1980; on a busy December weekend you'll share it with what feels like all 700,000 of its annual visitors. Santa sits for free photos — bring your own camera. Since 2020 there's also a ticketed drive-thru spinoff, and here's the recent change to know: Blinky's Drive Thru moved from History Park to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in 2025, with per-car tickets from $25.

What you'll actually find in the plaza
Enter from Market Street and you're in a grid of lit trees — over 500, each one decorated by a different community group, which is why the ornaments range from glitter macaroni to genuinely impressive. Dozens of musical, animated exhibits (many of them original mid-century pieces) anchor the corners, with the giant central tree as the meeting point. The Santa House near the big tree does free visits and photos with your own phone. Food vendors sell hot chocolate and treats; it's free to walk, so the only mandatory cost is whatever your kids talk you into.
Blinky's Drive Thru: the ticketed sibling
The drive-thru edition began as the 2020 COVID pivot at History Park and moved in 2025 to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds on Tully Road: over a mile of light tunnels and displays synced to music, open from late November through January 1, from $25 per vehicle with peak nights priced higher. Proceeds help fund the free downtown event, which takes some sting out of the ticket. Pajamas, cocoa thermos, holiday playlist: it's the lowest-effort lights night in the South Bay.
Parking, transit, and timing
Don't circle downtown: VTA's Green and Blue light-rail lines stop at San Antonio Station, a two-minute walk from the plaza. If you drive, ParkSJ garages give the first 90 minutes free — Second & San Carlos is the closest with the deal, and 90 minutes covers a solid visit with little kids. Weeknights before mid-December are the calm window; weekends after the 15th are shoulder-to-shoulder by 6pm. Going right after the noon opening trades some twinkle for zero crowds — the trees are still charming in daylight.
