Native American Heritage Month: Ohlone Medicine Guided Hike at Long Ridge
About
In honor of Native American Heritage Month in November, please join us on the Ohlone Medicine Guided Hike at Long Ridge Preserve . Learn which plants local Native Americans used to treat a variety of ailments from loose teeth and thinning hair to headaches and chest congestion. Docents Sarah Schoen and Nancy Weintraub of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will lead this exploration of the Peters Creek and Long Ridge Trails, with a lunch break overlooking the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. There will be frequent stops as you begin to appreciate Ohlone cultural practices used before the introduction of modern medicine. This is a moderate 4.7 mile hike with a total elevation gain of 600 feet. Important notes: Each participant must be registered ahead of time to participate in this event. Please arrive early, as we will start hiking promptly at 9:45am. Transportation is not provided. Exact meeting locations will be communicated prior to the hike. Participants are required to sign a Midpen activity waiver at the beginning of the hike. Restrooms are NOT available at the meeting area so please plan accordingly. Please bring plenty of water, and there will be a snack opportunity. Please wear hiking shoes, layered clothing, and weather protection.
