Shuck, Taste, & Discover: The Legacy of Black Watermen
About
Join Gardner Douglas, founder of S.S. Shucking, for an interactive oyster shucking and tasting workshop exploring the historic maritime legacy of African American watermen. Participants will engage in a live shucking demonstration and a guided tasting to experience the unique flavor profiles of regional oysters. With hands-on guidance, Gardner will introduce safe shucking techniques and oyster anatomy, while museum staff share insights into how emancipated African Americans utilized the 19th-century Chesapeake oyster boom to build community autonomy and financial independence. Your ticket includes a fresh selection of oysters to shuck and enjoy, along with a professional oyster knife and protective gloves to take home! In this workshop you will: Learn how to safely shuck oysters like a pro. Master proper knife technique and hand placement. Discover the difference between wild and farmed oysters.
